PERSONAL.

Private Charles S. Kelly, who left New Zealand with the 3rd Reinforcements, is returning by the Tofua. which is expected to arrive at Port 1 Chalmers about the 26th instant. Before enlisting, Private Kelly was a member of the literary staff of the "Stratford Evening Post," and was well-known in Stratford.

Corporal Cyril C. Bassett, Auckland's Victoria Cross hero, is 23 years old, and is a son of Mr and Mrs F. Bassett, of Burleigh Street, Mount Tden. He was a member of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank when war broke out. On one occasion young Bassett found two armed burglars attempting to open the bank safe. He pluckily tried to hold up the intruders, and called for help. He succeeded in preserving intact the bank property, but the burglars escaped. His conduct was greatly appreciated bv the bank officials.

Mr Alfred Coleman has resigned his appointment as Deputy Official Assignee for the Stratford District, which be has held for the past seven years, during which time over eight}' insolvent estates have been administered by him. The Justice Department has decided upon the retention of the appointment in Stratford and Mr J. B. Richards, who is well known in the district, has been appointed by His Excellency the Governor to succeed Mr Colman as Deputy Assignee. The appointment is certainly a most excellent one.

Sergeant "Boh" Woods has created a record for service that speaks for the virtue of always keeping Jit. Sergeant Woods landed on Gallipoli with the gallant heroes at Gaba Tepe, and has remained in the firing line over since. Tie i< now away, to the northeast of Snvla Bay in rough country which he says, is a mass of scrub and hill. Bob says that the only drawback to the whole game is the loss of so many chums in the Main Body, all of whom have suffered either death or sickness and wounds. Gallant Woods is the only Taranaki member of the Main Body who bag not been injured. It is hoped that his luck will continue.
