London, October S
The obscurity of the general sittfiitipn in the Balkans continues. There is no indication of King Constantiue's intention, tihough it is believed he s,till adopts a benevolent neutrality towards Serjbia, and doe.s not desire to obstruct the, France-British force. .British and', French officers arrived at, Salonika on October 1 and discussed, the Allied landing with the commander of the Third Creek Army Corps. When, the matter was referred to M. Yenizelos he conferred with the,.Ministers of . the Entente, with the result that-M. Yenizelos registered, a protest ..which was uot intended to impede the passage of the Allies, but to defend Creek s»vreignty.
The news of the Austro-Cilernian offensive Ikis aroused anxiety in Britain and ,Fiance and Italy, but it is recognised tliat the Serbians fas i" '» strong position on the lines where ,they inflicted a signal .defeat on the Austrians a year*, ago. 'Moreover, the valley of Moraya,is flooded, and most of the roads are only practicable by light Balkan ox-carts, of which the Aus-mans require twenty thousand to revictual the armies. An eye-witness at Salonika 1 describes' the arrival of great TransAtlantic liners at eight o'clock ion Tuesday morning, followed by smaller transports with war material. Destroyers escorted them into the harbor, and airships 'guarded the entrance. The landing, began on the western side of the harbor at nine o'clock. On the opposite quay were Creek transports with troops from Piraeus. The landing proceeded swiftly, the first gun bejng landed at, 9.30. The soldiers/ headed, by bands, marched to a prepared 4 camp through curious and sjlent spectators. • '
