FRENCH STALL OFF GERMANS. HEAVY OFFENSIVE CHECKED. United Press Association. (Received 8.15 a.m.) Paris, October 7. A communique states; On the 4th, counter-attacks against the position we recently captured in the woods westward of the Souchez and Angres road were completely repulsed. The Germans in the evening resumed a furious offensive against the positions, but they lost northward of Tahure and the attacks failed everywhere with very heavy losses to the enemy. Paris, October 7. Tahure hill is the centre of the section of the German line that is now being attacked, and of which it is the key to the. town of Tahure, only one and a-half miles from the German supply railway running parallel to the Champagne front.
A communique states: Our action in the Champagne has secured fresh results. The infantry, after a thorough artillery preparation, assaulted and carried the village of Tahure. and the summit of Height Tahure. halfway between Souain and Certnay. We also progressed in the vicinity of Xavari Farm, between Souain and Soumepy. We have already captured over a thousand, arc onlysevere artillefy duels elsewhere. ' , MfT i» ‘ EXCITEMENT IN’ GERMANY.
