Reports arriving from the Dutch East Indies indicate that a mysterious steamer, the Maverick, has been apprehended there by the agency bf Dutch warships. She was found to lie Mden with guns, ammunition, sections submarines and rifles apparently intended for German aggression in the Pacific. The il aYe rick departed from San Pedro, California, in April, clearing as, usual. Apparently the cargo .was not inspected, ft is thought that Germans in the United States planned to establish a Pacific submarine .base to operate against Russian or Australian steamers.
