Mr T. 1). Sullivan, Borough Overseer, resumed duty this morning after his ,nuuual leave of ten days. Mr A. •). Kirkwood received a cahlegram this morning stating that Ids brother, Major Kirkwood, who was recently wounded, is now in hospital at Versailles, near Paris, suffering from a shot in the shoulder. I Mr W. T. Bailey, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s Kltham staff, met with a painful accident in Hawera on Saturday morning. He was assisting to yard horses for the horse fair, and m endeavouring to turn hack a beast near Mr Potter’s Private Hotel, the horse he was riding slipped upon the tarred roadway, and the rider was thrown heavilv to the ground. Ho sustained a dislocation of a sinew m the leg. and it will he a few weeks before he w jll tie able to resume his duties. • Mr Ji A. Hansen, at present and during the'past ten years foreman to the Eltham Borough Council, has hoop 'appointed county engineer to the Waimate County Council. 'There weije 34 applications for the position (state,s the Manaia Witness), the runner-up to Mr Hansen being' Mr McLanchlah. assistant engineer on the Southland County Council. Mr Hansen’s strong feature and the one that influenced the council considerably, is his .large experience in road tarring, in which he 'is regarded as an expert and in which he has been successfully experiment'ing during the past half dozen years. |The salary attached to the position is £3OO per annum.
