GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACKS FAIL. United Press Association. (Received 12.45 p.m.) Paris, October 1. A coiiiiminique states; IVe progressed eastward and southward ol Neuville and northward of Massiges. German counter-attacks at Givenchy wood and Champagne were completely repulsed. VICTORIA CROSSES. (Received 12.-15 p.m.) London, October 1. 'Victoria Crosses have been awarded as follows; Captain Hansen Smith was with tin* Lincolnshire new army, on August 9, at Yielghin Burnn, Gallipoli, when the Lin coin shires were forced to retire, leaving the wounded, owing to the in[tense beat from tbe burning scrub. Hansen and three or, four volunteers dashed several times over four hundred yards of open ground under terriiic lire and rescued six wounded from inevitable death by burning. Private Potts, of tbe Berkshire Yeomanry, although severely wounded at Hill 70. remained for forty-eight hours under the Turkish trenches with a wounded Private, who was unable to move. Finally, using a shovel as a sledge, he dragged his comrade six hundred yards to the British lines though the Turks were tiring at him.
