Included in goods lor sale are eggs. cream, I'ioney. cakes, haskets of sweets, .flowers, cm, ferns, pot plants, and everything one could wish for in the way of produce and preserves. During the afternoon two hams were raffled. The four little gii;ls who are selling button holes amh llowers are sure to he responsible for collectinp; a large sum of money. An auction sale of the unsold goods w ill he conducted at S o’clock to-night; The country people—especially in the Toko district—donated produce, etc,-, unsparingly. and’ the large stock speaks well for the patriotic feeling of the farmers. The shop was lent tree of charge by .Mr Make. As our representative was making his exit this morning one of tin l ladies in charge remarked: “We have a lovely stock of goods and hope to make a lovely lot of money!” and someone brimming over with optimism said: “And so we will!”
That all efforts on behalf of patriotic* funds are -not w isely or well directed is made apparent hv details given by the Wellington Dominion of an “assault-at-arms’’ at Newtown Park a week or . two ago. The ]>apor referred to says; I “The total receipts amounted to W2o !)s l()d, and the expenditure totalled L'.'idl Ids Id. Included in the expenditure was -tS.’l for advertising and printing. L'7o as a lee to Captain McLaglen. who was the organiser of the programme and chief performer. C7d ids for motor-car hire and sundry lesser amounts. The point which will strike most people is the lavish manner in which the cost was piled up for a one-day entertainment. It is an extraordinary thing and certainly calls for explanation that the expenditure of t 7() Ids on motor-car hire should have been necessary. Who used so many motor-cars and whyt The fee to Captain .M'Laglen also seems a heavy charge l for a patriotic entertainment. The reason for the financial failure of the entertainment is attributed to, the weather being somewhat 1 unfavorable, hni even if this excuse, is Walid there still remains the fact that at the rate of expenditure incurred it would have required an attendance of something like SOtIO peoph l at one shilling per head to cover expenses alone before a penny of profit w as made. A very successful social and dance, the proceeds of which are to purchase comforts for the wounded soldiers, was held at Toko on Wednesday evening, when over fifty couples were present. During the evening songs were rendered by Miss F. Songster, Mr .Martin teomie), lightning sketches by Air Allen, and Highland reel by two Scotch lassies. Extras were played by Mrs Allen. Misses gangster, Clark, and Mr Mredow. The music for the dance was contributed by .Misses Evelyn and Amy Rogers. Messrs Chasij Rogers, and H. Rurmoster. Ihe evening was brought to a close at 2.30 a.in, with a vote of thanks to all who had assisted, and to Mr .). H. Hino, who paid for the use of the hall. The shop lately occupied by Messrs Cannon and Co., butchers, was clesufl cd out this morning ready for receiption of clothing for the desu? tntc civilians (women, children and old men) of Belgium. Mr G. X. Curtis. Chairman of the Stratford Belgian Relief Committee, who has charge of the receiving depot, stated that he was getting the cases ready for packing purposes as the goods have to he forwarded to Wellington in a fortnight’s time. The shop was open from 1 to 3 p.m. to-day and will he open on \\ ednesdays and Saturdays between the same hours up to October To. On other days parcels may he left at the Borough Council Chambers. Country residents cannot mis■'take the depot, as a large Belgian (lag is flying from a masthead alongside the shop. Patriotism! What crimes are committed in thy name! Because for a time' the law relating .to lotteries was a dead letter, it must not be supposed for a moment that other regulations mav he infringed with impunity. A little matter to which attention must ho drawn is particularly applicable to this district at present. WeU-dujJjj ed farmers donating sheep to “Patriotic .Market” for sale in Stratford should bear in mind that the ail mulls must he slaughtered Jit tjjhe abattoirs, otherwise the good ladies making the sales may find themseUes ordered to appear before the Magis■traff. It ?s u.seM ( /od that, complaints of isuch ininngcment* of tm law have ijlready been heard, and while the authorities are loth undei tbt-j .special circumstances to take action','it would he well for everyone tf strictly observe the U future.
