The climate has taken a heavy toll of the British and Indian troops alike. The troops opposing the British advance are mainly Turkish regulars, assisted by Arab and Kurd levies and warlike Arabs. The tribesmen of the country have lately played a three-cornered game, harassing and plundering- both sides, and sometimes turning a Turkish defeat into a disastrous rout.
