Though the price of meat is very high, the butcher is not always the gainer. The other morning Victoria Bridge—and a pig's head!- was well guarded by a big black-and-white greyhound. -Speculation was rife as to where the dog had "borrowed" the "bone." and later it was ascertained that it had Been "Ijfted" when the butcher was otherwise engaged: • A gentleman who ; was- in " Manaia during the week (remarks the Witness) mentioned the case < of a Wellington dentist who joined the Expeditionary Forces some little while'ago. He was, our informant states,' given the rank of captain right off. his military' pay being 30s per day, and, in.addition, a retaining fee of ten guineas a week as a dentist. He was 'alfco -fortunate enough to dispose of his interest in his business for £:30() until the end of the war, when it again reverts to him. Asked as to the circumstances attending his appointment and pay, our informant replied, "friends at court," and vouched personally lor the accuracy of the'Story.
