THE NEW RAILWAY FARES

AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. The effect of the new railway fares has not yet become apparent, but the public is discovering that the increases made in connection with the Government's proposal for raising additional revenue are substantial. , The amount of the increase is shown in the following table:—

WEEK-END TICKETS. A RAILWAY EXPERIMENT. The Railway Department will begin the issue of special week-end tickets on Saturday next in order to test the results of this concession. The tickets, costing single fare and one-third for the double journey, will be issued from any station to any station on Saturdays, available for return up to and including the following Monday. The outward journey must he completed on Saturday, and on the return journey the passenger mus treach his final destination- at or before 11 p.m. on Monday following the date of issue. The minimum fare will be 5s 5d first-class and As 9d for second-class. The week-end tickets being issued for, a specific purpose are not available for break of journey, and will not be recognised if presented on any train that is timed to reach the destination of the passenger after 11 p.m. on Monday.
