WANGANUI MEETING. (Notes by Cicero.) The Wanganui Jockey Club received very poor acceptances numerically for their Spring fixture. Just what the reason of the poor response from owners is due to, is hard to say, but possibly the meeting extending from 1 luirsday: to Saturday is not favorable to the majority . of owners, as one must put in practically a week if represented on both days. The Otaki meeting following so close (Monday and Tuesday) must also have a detrimental effeqt. Despite the small fields, some good racing should bo witnessed, as class is well represented, and each event bears an open appearance. The meeting will open with the Flying Handicap, for which event twelve have accepted. Centre, Mia Cara, and Glenroy should each command, a largo following. Moutoa Queen ran prominently at Marton, and will carry a lot of bullion in the Maiden Hack, but may meet more than her match in, Harlequin. The absence of Loyal Arch, Eligible, and Desert Gold from the Guineas field has considerably weakened that event. Nones has been galloping in good style at Wanganui, and on two-year-old form looks to have the race at her mercy. Battle Eve had a great private reputation last year, but failed to sustain it with the colors up. Sir George Clifford’s colt, like many others, may he served by time, and will possibly give Nones a good race. Hydros, who won the Maiden at Marton, is highly spoken of, and has the advantage of a race in public. Nones, Battle Eve, and Hydrus should provide a good contest. Six only appear in the Okehu Hurdles. If at all well Royal Arms should be a strong favorite. A poor field Will also line up for the Gonville Hurdles'. Glenorchy ran a fair race at Marton, and should pay a dividend. Last year eighteen started for the Putiki Hack, and this year eight only have accepted. However,, they appear an even lot, and the winner is well concealed. Spain, Depredation, and Coropet are a likely trio. A number of fair “toilers” are under engagement in the Spring Handicap. Fortify is very well at present, and Prince Laddo (6.1 D is nicely handicapped. I may here state that the winner of this event incurs a penalty of 51bs in the New Zealand Cup. The first day’s racing will close with the Durie Hack, for which event Snapdragon and Welcome Nugget appear well in.
