COMMONWEALTH CABLES.

NO GERMAN TRADE IN THE EAST. OiilMD I*KIM aiBOOMTtUN Sydney. Septemer 20. William Vinson Bee, the managing director of On Vek and Bee, a wellknown Chinese linn, who has recently returned from. China, states that German trade in the East is dead. All the German houses in Hong Kong were forced to liquidation. Before the war Germany , was a, dangerous competitor for the Chinese trade. Germany’s success was largely due to the fact that they, understand the methods to be employed. They often look up contracts at below cost price in order to oust the British. They also sold British goods cheaper than the British, thus attempting to convince the Chinese that the British were making undue profits,' and averred that many British lines were really manufactured in Germany. The losses incurred by these methods were recouped from the State Financial 'Trust, whose main object was to knock out British trade. The Trust in turn recouped itself from China by diplomatic blackmail. The sole aim of Germany in the East was to down British trade and Britons in the eyes of China, who were not deceived. Melbourne, September .20. Zwar Brothers’ tannery, at Beechworth was destroyed, the damage amounting to £20.000. Commenting on Sir George Reid’s offer to continue the Agent-General-ship without salary, Mr Fisher said that Australia is not a petitioner for relief, and it is, a mistake to place it in that category.
