THE ATHENAE ON FIRE. ALL HANDS SAVED. (UNITEr Press Association.] (deceived .10 a.m.) Vancouver, A vessel believed' to be either the Donaldson liner Athenia, or ■ former , German ship Athenae is afire at sea. 'i nnhigii wireless tlie Anchor liner Tusconia is believed to have taken all aboard. SETTLING SUBMARINES. London, September 19. Colonel Eepington says that -the watchfulness of our Grand Fleet and its successes ■,against German suhmarines are acknowledged, and the fact that masses of our troops are still remaining in Britain has inspired the people with confidence. This accounts for their complete indifference on the question of raids and invasion. It is now regarded that the success of an oversea attack on Britain is less probV able than it was a year ago. Owing to the complete destruction of the German naval power and bases overseas, and the Italian entry into the war, we are able to devote all our naval, strength to the task of controlling the German fleet and protecting British shores. We have heard frequently of the German intention to •strike a blow, hut on every occasion •' the enemy's courage has failed at the critical hour, and it is likely to, because our fleet is growing at a faster rate than Ids. The British Navy lias done its work to perfection. Copenhagen, September 19. A Germam submarine was seen destroyed fourteen miles off Utsire. and three German hydroplanes ■ were destroyed in the Baltic. Copenhagen* September 20. Fishermen saw three submarines off T’tsire. Then came an explosion, and only two submarines remained. Some . believe that the lost submarine was a German one disguised as British,, which’ the others sank in error.
