The Imperial Government has requested the New Zealand Governmnt to raise fin engineer and tunnelling company of three or four hundred men, the personnel to be experienced facemen, and some less skilled assistants. It is proposed to obtain the company from the miners of the country and from men experienced in tunnelling work in connection with the Puhlic Works Department. Only a limited number of coal-miners can be accepted, as it is of importance that jiothing should be done to limit the production of coal. The men would proha l ly he trained for a month in a camp which it is proposed to establish in or near Auckland. The agfe will be from 21 to 40 years. Men are invited to register wi L .l:>U'; del.iv at the local defence offices, in the usual way. SICK-AND WOUNDED SOLDIERS' FUND. Interviewed on the conference recently held in Wellington concerning the above fund, the Stratford delegate (Mr W. P. Kirkwood) has furnished the following particulars:— The conference was well attended by representatives from throughout the Dominion; Wairarapa was not represented. The resolution moved by Mr Skerrett, which embodied the basis of a National Fund to provide for sick and wounded soldiers and dependents, was carried by a large majority; the Auckland and Otago delegates did not vote. The wording of Mr Skerrett's motion precisely followed the requirements of Auckland as embodied in a resolution emanating from that city, so that although Auckland's representative at the conference wasS not given the power to \ r ote, probably now that their wishes have been met they will see the way clear to agree to a National scheme. It was abundently apparent at the conference that Wellington was not seeking to necessarily have the head centre there, as the representatives of that place clearly stated that any centre agreed upon by a majority vote would be acceptable. The committee set up by the conference to draw up details in conformity with the basis agreed upon will report to another conference to be called at a later date, when it is confidently hoped that the National scheme will be put in full working order. During the conference the Hon. Mr A. L. Herdman attended and explained the proposed working of a newlycreated department, namely the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department. This department will endeavour, in conjunction with Patriotic Committee, to find employment for returned soldiers. Registers will be kept of all men requiring employment and generally the Department will be conducted on the line s of a Registry and Information Bureaux.
