Barford and Company v. Joseph Smith, at the Stratford Magistrate Court this morning, for the amount claimed. £2 18s Bd, and 5 S costs. In the case Henry Johnson v. Daniel Favier, the debtor was ordered to pay £4 7s Gd, in default seven days' imprisonment. At the Supreme Court at Hamilton George Phillips, an elderly man, was sentenced To Jive years i'or indecent assault on a male. John Johnstone got eighteen months for forgery: Murco Farac. six months for forgerv following the precedent of judges of the Higher Courts in Fn,'..'and, Mr Justice Cooper gave Major Xorthcroft permission to appear in the Court in military uniform. The objects \rf the Australian Universal Service League, which is being strongly supported, are:-(l) To advocate the adoption for the period of I the present war of the principle of universal compulsory service at homo or abroad, in the battlefield or elseIwhere; and to support the Government in providing at the earliest possible moment such organisation as is necessary to secure the wise and just application of ibis principle. (2) To I secure the passage of legislation for I the above purposes; and to assure the Federal Government that such legislation will command tbe loyal suport of the people of the Commonwealth.
