Tlip latest applicants from the Stratford district for service with the reinforcements are Messrs G’eo. W. Trask and Geo. Matson (Kohuratahi). who have been passed as medically fit. Mr George H. Maria, of Christchurch, brother of Mr J. Marra, of Stratford, who was serving with the /troops at the Dardanelles, is reported missing. A third brother is on his way with the latest reinforcements. Mr G. K. Chesterton, whose stirring appeal for the Belgians appears in another column, is one of the most active of the younger writers in England, He j is a satirist, poet, journalist and; j novelist, and writes ;roluminously on social questions,'art, ipolitics, and is aii audacious and dexterous critic. Ho ‘contributes a weekly essay to the “11Justra^, London-Xews.’V Mr Chestertdn his' also written several plays, the fir|tfof which wksi produced in 1913. He has also published studies on the lives dud works of Dickens and Browning. Recently lie has wielded his sympathetic pen effectively on behalf’ of the Belgians. Captain Wallingford is renowned throughout Gallipoli, and his reputation as one of the finest shots the British army ever had lias been maintained at the Dardanelles in a manned that well entitles hirit to'rank among the fabulous heroes ;of the Peloponnesus.’ His execution among the Turks lias been almost unbelievable, and it is declared that 'only on one occasion has he failed to kill his Ottoman; before breakfast.; His hag has now grown to such dimensions that-;it is declared'by several men on the Tahiti, soberly and as an indisputable fact, that up to a couple--of iVionths ago he had off his own rifle accounted for no fewer than 700 Turks, and he always shoots to kill.
