The costume qigar and umbrella cycle race, for which a trophy is to be awarded the winner, should also prove attractive For those who wish to show thenprowess at weilding the hockey stick, a match is to he played “men y. women ”■ in which the contestants have to he attired in skirts. The event is one of the “star” features of the afternoon, and those who wish , to have a hearty laugh should not miss seeing the men (in skirts) playing hockey against members of the fairer sex. A trophy is the prize for the winner of the men’s race of 10,000 yards—more or less—it is stated that J the distance will most likely he less! The children have not been forgotten, as races, side shows, and other endless fun will be provided for the “wee mites” who cannot attend th? social in the evening. The entrance fee for the afternoon’s carnival will he, adults 11 ’ d and children oid, the gate-keeper not being provided with change! The real fun of the day does not commence until 7 o’clock, when a large torchlight procession will proceed from the Fire Station along Broadway to the Town Hall. The - procession will comprise of 100 lied Cross Nurses (of Stratford), Four Bands, Dark Town Fire Brigade, Three Visiting Fire- Brigades, Exhibits of all kinds—Decorated Cars, Motor Lorries, Two Warships (H.M.S. Queen Lizzie and New Zealand, fully manned, and firing big guns), The | Caged Kaizer, Wild Animals, Gay Japanese, etc. When the Hall is f reached, the performers will line up and witness the spectacular “burning i of the Kaizer,” which is to he held . on the section adjoining the building. , A very fine selection of fire works, I coloured lights, etc., are to be ignited at the same time as the “chief of the 1 Huns” is being dismissed in flames and smoke.
Tlie feature of the whole carnival is the “hard up” social which is to commence at 8 o’clock. For those who participate in the dancing, it is compulsory to wear fancy dresses and masks. The young ladies will no doubt lie there in hundreds to see the “latest in fashions,” so that this will prove the event of the year as far as they are. concerned. Songs and recitations will be rendered by talented artists Dom Stratford, Hawera, Inglewood, and New Plmouth. The music for the evening entertainment will be supplied by Professor Waugh’s orchestra. Special prizes will bo awarded for: ilest “hard-up” dress, woman; best “hard up” dress, man; best fancy dress, woman; and best fancv * . ' \ dress, man.
