Till' Balkan muddle continues a distract inc problem to both the enemy and tlic Allies, and except that very niucb depends on Bulgaria's iinal attitude. little ol' what is to l>e done is known. The Berlin lie factories are,
of course, very busy circnlalinc statements calculated to sway the Bulgarian (.'overnment, and are makinc explanations of Sofia’s coyness to fall in with Turkish wishes. The aims of the various Balkan States were outlined by a London Times special writer recently, and Servia. he explained, aims at the constitution of a sinele Slavonic State, or croup of Stales, with a population of over T 2.000,000, while desiring at the same time to keep her new Macedonian possessions. Boumania demands Transylvania, the Banal, and the Bukowina. which have a total population of over 5.000,000 and an area of 12.‘UK)0 square kilometres. The Haims of (1 recce, as outlined by ,M. Veue/.elos. comprise I 10,000 square kilometres in Asia Minor, with a population of at least 1.000,000, Bulgaria' claims the
purely Bulgarian districts in Macedonia. together with those of Kavala, In-ama, and Senes, with a population of considerably less than 2.000,000. In London in 1912 M. Venezelps declared his readiness to hand over these districts to Bulgaria ; but that, of course, was before the stirring np of internal ka n hatreds by the second Balkan war and the treaty of Bucharest. Still, if Bulgaria were assured oi national unity, it is said that she would not be opposed to the indefinite extension of other Sta'es.
