LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the meeting of delegates of thoj Patriotic Committees this morning it was decided, on the motion of Mr Kirk wood, and seconded by -MiMcNeil, that the Patriotic Societies! of Tarauaki be affiliated into one .branch. Weather forecast.—The indications are for southerly moderate to strong winds. The weather will probably prove cold and showery, and the nightvery cold, but should improve temporarily shortly. The barometer has a rising tendency at present.—Bates,' Wellington.
It is to be hoped the War Fee-tore in Stratford 'to-night will attract a large audience. Mr John Clegg, who is a well-known citizen ,of Dunedin, tells a thrilling story of personal experience. Mr Clegg i s touring New Zealand entirely without remuneration, paying his own expenses, and devoting all proceeds to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The Stratford Patriotic Committee, is perfectly satisiied as to Mr Clegg's bona fides, and is according him all possible support.
The Stratford Ladies' Patriotic Committee held a meeting at Stratford on August "loth, when Mrs J. W. Boon (Mayoress) presided over a good meeting. It was resolved to hold an Allies' Bazaar in the Town Hall in December. The stalls for the Bazaar were allotted as follows :- Tea stall. Mesdames Good, Crawshaw, tjniacke, Budge. Abraham, Middleton, Grant and Stuart; produce, Mesdames Hine, Curtis and Dingle; fancy, Mesdames Boon and McQuay; plain, Mesdames McDonald. Petrie, and Copping; flower. Mesdames" Prentice and Lawrence; Country; Mrs Saugster; jumble, Mrs Skoglund ; ' sweets, Mrs Malpnc; bran tub, Miss Skoglund. The meeting ordered 100 skins for the purpose of making leather waistcoats for the troops at the front. Subscriptions were paid to the Treasurer (Mrs P. H. White) as follows: Mrs Curtis 10s, Mrs H. Good £2, Mrs Boon £1 10s. Mrs Peeve £l, Mrs Budge £1 10s.
Speaking at the conference of delegates of the Patriotic Committees of Taranaki at the Town Hall this morning, the. Chairman, Mr ! Wilson, Mayor of Xew Plymouth, said that his committee had bad a request from, the Manawatu Society for a contribution for.the discharge of the debt incurred in providing .bund, instruments;for .the regimental band at : Trentham Camp. The speaker said that the Palmerston North Society had donated £lO 10s, and he would like to know what the other committees were doing in the matter, if the funds were available, he thought the societies ought to assist in getting instruments. The band bad procured the instruments not thiiik'ing of the liability.they incurred in .so doing, and had trusted, to luck in getting them paid for: The instruments cost £2OO. Mr Kirkwood said the matter strongly appealed to .the Stratford committee, and'a donation of £lO wast made;' 'Mr "Dixon said Hawera had given £lO. Other delegates said;that it was the first time they had known anything about the matter. ;-:, :! ' .
