Mr A. E. Hunter was presented, by Messrs Smart Bros, on Monday afternoon with a silver cigarette case and holder, also a hoot tidy, on the occasion of his leaving the linn to join the reinforcements. Air George Smart, in making the presentation, referred to the good work done by Mr Hunter, and wished him God speed ytiidifa safe return from tfie battle line.

Mr W. B. Maxwell, who died at Te Aroha on Tuesday last, was horn in England in 1863, and joined the Royal Navy in his youth. During the Crimean War, he served on H.M.S. Majestic. between 1861 and 18. Vi. in the China War on H.M.S. Shannon in iB6O. and in the Indian Mutiny, in Peel’s X aval Hi ■igade. in 1867 and 1868. Soon after he came to New Zealand. and took part in the Maori War. He served under Captain Sfcapp and Major Atkinson in 1860, at Patea. and under Colonel T. McDonald, Major Hrassey, Colonel'Whitmore, and Major von Tempsky, between 1865 and 1866. At the outbreak of the present war. the 1 old soldier volunteered, although bordering on eighty years,and received a courteous reply that he was accepted and .would he called upon when required. Deceased had three medals for the Crimea, one for the Maori War, ami no less than three others from the Hoval Humane Society.

A tribute is paid to the late Lieutenant .). H. Allen, recently killed in action at the Dardanelles, in a communication received by the Hou. Allen from (leneral Hunter-Weston. commanding the division in which the officer Was serving at the time of hi^ v death:—“Lieutenant .1. H. Allen (Worcester Regiment), and attached to the Essex Regiment, joined the 29th Division out here on May 26. and took part in all the fighting with the 29th Division, which occurred south of Krithia. including the successful battle on dime I, when three lines of trenches were captured with 'great loss to the enemy. Throughout all the fighting Lieutenant Allen led his platoon with great gallantry. On dune 6 the Turks made heavy counter-attacks, which were repulsed with severe lighting, and Lieutenant Allen was shot while gallantly leading Ids men on this dav.”
