HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.

The High Commissioner reports under date August 21:— Meat.— Canterbury and North Island

plentiful with a fair demand at o;Jd

31 ore lambs have been released, but the prices have declined, with the result that the demand is getting better. The demand has also been stimulated by the scarcity of chilled beef and is chiefly for light weight. Lamb.—Canterbury twos BJd, heavy weights, fours 7fd ; second grade light weights 7gd; other than Canterbury 8-16 d for the best quality. Higher prices have been paid for light weight. Beef.—Chilled beef is not quoted officially. A very limited supply at the market is selling at hinds 10d, fores Bd.

Butter.—The market is firm. The loss of a steamer with 28,000 casks of Siberian butter has made the market firmer. Danish is in small demand at 169 s to 1725, Siberian in good demand, but little offering, at 134 sto 1365, Irish creamery firm at 156 s to 160 s, unsalted 160 s to 1625.

Cheese.—The market is very quiet and the prices irregular. Canadian quiet 73s to 75s (according to quality and condition), exceptionally 655, English Cheddar quiet 9ls; for New Zealand the market is quiet hut steady at 73s to 755; United States quiet at 68s to 70s, but if not in good condition is selling at 62s to 655. Hemp.—The market is quiet but steady. New Zealand good to fair grade is at £32 10s, fair £3O 10s. A forward shipment was quoted at the same price. Manila, new graded to fair £3B.

Wheat.—The market is weaker, slightly lower, but it is reported that the Canadian crop is large and of good quality. Oats.—The market is quiet, small business doing. Wool.—The market remains firm.
