The Hon. Mr Allen (Minister of Defence) has received advice that the transport Tahiti left Suez on August 7 and the Aparima on August 10, both for New Zealand. The Tahiti has nearly five hundred sick and wounded New Zealanders aboard, and possibly the Aparima is also bringing New Zealand soldiers.
THE NEED FOR MACHINE'CUNS,

Some time ago the Minister for Defence sent a cable to the Imperial authorities asking if they could; supply machinery for the manufacture of mac-hine-guns in the 'Dominion, and ho has received a reply that all the available machinery was being used iu Britain. Since then the Minister had had further communications in regard to the proposed purchase of machine-guns for the New Zealand forces with funds raised hy private subscription, arid yesterday he received a cable stating that the War Office would be grateful for the generous offer to supply mac-bine-guus. but that all available are required for distribution to the troops. Equally the War Offie regret it cannot make a special allotment to the New Zealand troops. Mr Allen stated that he knew the Office was securing all the machine-guns it could manufacture or buy. and was distributing them to the troops in the various theatres of war in excess of the normal establishment.
