On the Sea
TRANSPORT SUNK. SUBMARINED IN AEGEAN SEA. 600 SAVED OUT OF 1600. The High Commissioner reports:— London. August 17 (Lilt) p.m.). The Admiralty announce_ that the British transport Royal Kdward was sunk by a submarine in the Aegean Sea on Saturday. According to inlormation available, the transport had on board thirty-two military officers. 1350 troops, and a ship’s crew of 220 officers and men. The troops were mainly reinforcements of the 2!)th Division and details ol the R.A.M.C , It* is known that about 000 were saved. WORK OF THE GERMANS. United Puesp Association. London, August 1.7. The Royal Kdward was torpedoed by a German submarine.

The American reply to Germany on the William P. Frye case, while accepting the suggestion of a Commission U> determine damages, declines to arbitrate on the interpretation ol a Prusso-Aniericaii treaty.
ARBITRATION FOR AMERICA.
Washington, August 17
America, replying to Germany m the William P. Fyne case, says she will accept arbitration by the Hague Convention, hut demands that Germany meanwhile states whether she intends to conduct marine operations in accordance with the terms of the Pnissian-Aiiierican treaty or with those as interpreted by the United States.
