The Pacific Mail Steamship Company has sold five large steamers to the Atlantic, Transport Company. The sale is the outcome ot‘ the Lafollette Shipping Bill, which prohibits American vessels employing cheap Oriental labor. The Pacific Mail Company are therefore unable to compete with their Japanese rivals and will discontinue the service in November. President Wilson has ordered an inquiry into the provisions of the Bill with a view to revising it if it hampers the American merchant marine. NORWEGIAN STEAMER SUNK.
