C.d.G. PROFITS TO WAR.
Per Press Association. Christchurch. August 14
A special general meeting of memhers of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held this afternoon to consider the question of giving the whole of the net profits of the club for the financial year ending April 30. 1916. to the fund or funds connected with the war. Mr W F. M. Buckley, president of the club, was in the chair, and there was a very large and representative attendance of members. The president formally moved a motion to contribute the whoie of the profits of the club tor the year to a fund or funds connected with the war. Mr F. H. Pyne, in seconding the motion, said that ho was delighted to see a , large attendance there that day. He hoped that there would he an unanimous vote on question at issue. Tu England racing had been practically stopped, hut he did not advocate that hero, as it would he disastrous to many people employed who could not do anything else. Tf they gave all their profits to a war fund, it would he a popular action, and would cut the ground from under a large section of the community who thought that all racing should he stopped. The average profits of the cluh for the last eight years had been, approximately. £4OOO per year, and there was fair reason to suppose that that sum, approximately, could he donated. The motion was carried unanimously.
Mr Reid moved that, in any case, a minimum sum of £2OOO should he guaranteed to the war funds, and this was also carried.
