When it became known a fortnight ago that Bert TVnott had received inarching orders, steps were at once taken to' fitingly mark the occasion of his departure, and it was arranged to hold a farewell concert, and dance on Friday evening last, and also to commemorate the event hy a suitable pie ' sental ioii. Just prior to the function being hold, two other young men of the district, Messrs Allan and Boy ,Thomson, also received marching orjders. and it was at once decided to bold a ‘•combined function, and steps 'were taken to suitably show honour 'to these young men who are also going ' forth to fight our battles. Active interests was taken in the event hy settlors within a radius of many miles in all directions, representatives of 'neighbouring communities joining us in doing honour to the guests. Kiore 'residents in particular rendered sterling assistance in contributing both towards the commemorative presentations, and also to the evening’s programme. In spite of the unsettled state of the weather, a very lai’orp number of people were present to show respect to the guests and Avi.-h them Plod-speed and a safe return and incidentally to enjoy a very fine concert programme and pleasant dance. Aliss Muriel Pearson; recitation. All’s Aleuli; duet, Afessrs \Y. Stewart and A. Tad (enc.) i During an interval in the concert programme, Air Bert Perrott was presented with a gold medal, suitably inscribed, to commemorate the occasion. and Messrs A. and B. Thomson were presented each with a gentleman’s companion. In making the pre-

sentations. the chairman (Air W. Phillies) while eulogising the guests and complimenting them on the part they were about to play hy active service, expressed our appreciation of their sacrifices on our behalf, and earnestly exhorted all present to seriously do the part that each one honestly felt to he his or hers. When the guests had each, in a few well-chosen words, responded, the audience united in singing “For they arc jolly good fellows,” and ibis was followed by three ringing cheers fqr the departing bovs.
