The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 1915. USE OF POISON GAS.
According to a well-known writer on military matters at this time there is some evidence that the Germans' use of poison-gas is only in its beginnings, and that gas is going to he the main weapon in German warfare. There are other reasons for this besides the sibility of a lack of the raw material for making high explosives. One of the biggest difficulties a modern army has to face is that of transport, and. quite apart from questions of manufacture, the probability is that a gasmaking and distributing plant and the necessary chemicals would cause far] less trouble in this way than the guns] and shells that would be needed to produce a similar effect. It lias been claimed that a few tanks of gas will do ihe work of a thousand shells. At ihe same time there are still a, nunvj |,er of difficulties to bo overcome lie-' lore, the gas can be relied upon to do its work of murder properly, and withnut the danger of its drifting I jack upon the trenches from which it was sent—a happy accident which has already occurred more than once upon lu.th ihe eastern and western Fronts. At present the Germans are said Lo be trying to invent some hotter means of sending out the gas. hut it must not he forgotten that British, French, ami Russian scientists are also at work «.<ji some such scheme, and it is unlikely tlKit Germany will reap much real be.'U'fit from this foul method of lighting which to her everlasting shame she Iras made a means of modern warfare.
