The United States officials unofficially admit that the British answer to American protests regarding interferences with neutral trade with Germany has now reached a stage of academic discussion. Further Notes are pending, but an ultimate agreement is likely to be reached by arbitration.

American opinion expects that Britain's forthcoming Note saying she will uphold the British maritime policy will be a considerable disappointment in consequence, and there will also be dismay if cotton is declared contraband. Americans feel that Britain is mistaken in pursuing her justifiable ends illegally when they are reachable legally.
THE CREW OF THE AE2.
Melbourne, August 5
Rear-Admiral' Cresswell has received a letter from the commander of submarine AE2, which was sunk in the Sea of Marmora, stating that the crew are imprisoned in the centre of Asia .Minor. They are all well, and taking 'their. imprisonment cheerfully. Their treatment is as good as it is possible to expect. None of the crew were lost when the, vessel was sunk. The letter adds: "When ! am able to send my report, it Mill show that the manor in which all hands performed their duty Mill speak volumes for the future of the Australian Navy. On many occasions only a matter of seconds separated them from certain death, but all hands, down to the youngest, did their work steadily, and their coolness was beyond all praise. BRITISH STEAMER SUNK. (Received 8.55 a.m.) London, August 5. The British steamer Costello was sunk, one of the crew being drowned.
