A deputation of the W.C.T.U. wait oil on the Mayor of Christchurch to protest against raffles for patriotic purposes. The .Mayor defended tin practice, and referred the deputation to the members of Parliament. Nelson. August 2.
A most successful gala was held in Nelson yesterday in aid of the sick and wounded soldiers' fund, resulting in £I2OO being raised. Within eight days, hy means of produce fairs, competitions, and to-day's events, the funds have been .increased by £2-100. in addition to which £4OO was raised in Motucka. All parts of the district cooperated. Wellington, August 2, In his report on the health of the Saiuoan garrison at the jyeek-end the Administrator (Colonel Logan) states that the general health is <;ood. The wireless operator. R. Croueher, is suffering from enteric fever, and the following from minor troubles:—Corporal C. E. R. Kelly, Privates W. Martin. W. Alexander, C. J. Johnston. H. E. Cbcld, M. J.'Dunn, and H. Bennett. All arc doing well.
