A communique states: Alter repulsing several enemy attacks by means of hand grenades, we occupied a section of trenches on the sunken road between Ablain and Angres. northward of Hethune and the Arras high road. We obtained the advantage in mine-fighting on the Perthes and Beausejours front. We repulsed the Germans at Marie Theresc and St. Hubert after a brisk bomb and petard fight. Our artillery quenched three attacks on our positions at Hautbois between Les Epargesjaud the Tranehee de Calonne. The Germans bombarded Font a Mousson and the neighbouring villages with incendiary shells.

ENEMY OPERATIONS REPULSED. The High Commissioner reports:—London, August "1 (4.55 p.m.) At Artois, after repulsing several grenade attacks, the French captured portion of a trench, including the sunken road from Ablain to Angres. north of the main road from Bethune to Arras. In the Champagne region at Marie Therese and St. Hubert, after lively fighting with bombs and petards, the Germans attempted several attacks, which repulsed. On the heights of the Meuse, the enemy attacked three positions between the Calonne trench and Les Kparges, but the attacks were,checked. At Pout a Mousson, at the villages of Mardresse and .Manocourt Sureseilles, the Germans bombarded witli incendiarv shells.
