Tlie death of Sir John Downer, an ex-I'remier of South Australia, and one ''of the pioneers of Federation is announced from Adelaide.
Notice is to hand that Mr Lance Buchler. of the Stratford School, has been appointed Lieutenant to the 3rd Reinforcements (Liverpool's Own), and is to join'camp on September 11. Mr Buchler is deservedly popular with the Hiyh School Cadets, and the boys are very proud of his appointment.
Private 'Rupert Xieholls, who is an inmate of the Davis Street Private Hospital. Wellington, suffering from a shattered thigh sustained at the Dardanelles, was put under the Xrays. and live pieces of bullets were discovered in the wound in his thigh. Last night the matron of the hospital wired thevXicholls family at Inglewood stating that an operation had been performed anad the patient was progressing as well i:«s could be expected under the circumstances.
Mr George Ellwood, the well-known musician, returned to Ch listen urch to-day (states a P.A. telegram). Mr Ellwood, who went to Germany two weeks prior to the outbreak of the war. and was for some months ill Berlin, states that when it became known England had declared war Germany became depressed, and there was never much enthusiasm at any time. The great hatred of the British and a popular dread of the Cossacks are the main'features of-life in the city.
