Tlie cliairnian reported that lie had to make the following temporary appointments;—l a rata. Miss Kerrisk, assistant: Tarata, Miss Dempster, head teacher; Stratford D.H.S., Mrs (ieddes, assistant; Pohokura, -Miss Bowntree, sole teacher; \ogeltouti. Miss M. Wilson, head teacher; Hnapnha, Miss F. Hranley. assistant; Huirangi, Miss Rowlands, head teacher; Vogeltowu. Mrs M ilkes. assistant; Raupuha, Mrs Calvert, head teacher; Awatnna, Miss Eason, assistant; Lepperton. Mrs Calvert, head teachei. SCHOOL FOR TAHOHA. Twenty-one employees of the Public Works Department on the StratfordMain Trunk railway petitioned for a school at Hnrimoana. midway between Tahora and Marco Road. r lhe petition pointed out that the roads prevented children from travelling. The inspector reported;—l have the honor to report on the recpiest lor a new school at Tahora.- The present school iff held in a rough structure which as regards size and suitability for teaching purposes is totally inadequate for present requirements. r l he roll number is‘ now 38, with an average attendance of 30 and 29 for the March and June quarters respectively. The men of the railway line are gradually shifting towards the Tahora township. The tunnel will soon be completed, and in a very short time the train will be running into the township. Tahora will he probably the terminus for many years to come, and a good many houses for railway men are to he erected. Several other buildings are likely to he put up in the township in the near future, and land in the immediate vicinity is to lie put on the market soon. The ease is urgent. and 1 think that an application should be at once made to tlie Department for a grant for a new school on the section set apart for this purpose in the township. It will be a good permanent site for all time. The report was adopted, and it was decided to apply to the Department for a grant for the election of a school as suggested. In regard to the householders’ petition, the opinion was expressed that most of the children could go to the proposed school at Tahora. The petition was referred to the inspectors for a report, OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer reported, inter alia:— General.—.l have prepared plans for a building for agriclutural purposes at Stratford, new schools at Radnor and Mt. Messenger, and additions to thV» Kaimata school. SCHOOLS WANTED. A number of householders in the Pukengahu block applied for a school to be established in their district. It was proposed that the school should he on the Waihapa Road, a mile Ironi the 'corner of Robson Road. 1 here were 27 children of school age and eight more would be ol school age next year. Now some ol the children had to travel o-j miles a day to go to school and others travelled di miles. The application was referred to the inspectors to report on. Eighteen families were represented in a petition for a school at the junction of Finnerty and Stuart Roads. The number of children who would attend the school was 32. These children now went seven, live, and three and alialf miles to school. The petitioners promised to provide an acre ol ground for the school, board and residence to be arranged for the teacher. The application was referred to the inspectors to report on. A CONTROL OF SCHOOLS. Messrs Harm and Reynolds were appointed to the Bird School Committee in place of Messrs Giddy and I'’reeling. Owing to the following school districts having failed to elect school committees the undermentioned resident householders were appointed commissioners:—Kiore, Messrs James Caldwell and James Stockley ; Kohuratahi. Messrs W. Hodge and 0. McCntehan ; Mangachn. Mr J. Norris ; Okato, Messrs W. A. Corbett and W. Clark; Pika. Mr J. H. Henwood; Pohokura. Mr P. M. Pitcathly. GENERAL. In pursuance of a report presented by Mr Mackay, it was decided to grant the Aekland School Committee a L - for C subsidy towards the cost ot preparinig a portion ol their grounds for an agricultural plot, the Board’s grant not to exceed L'3.
It wits decided to confirm the action of the Hnirangi Committee in closing the Hnirangi School on account ol nil epidemic in the district. It was decided to inform the Central School Committee that the hoard had decided to open the Vogeltown School as a full standard school, and that the hoard saw no reason to alter its decision.
The applications of the Waitara and Toko Committees to keep their schools open during the time fixed lor the spring holidays were granted provided the teachers were agreeable. The following resignations were accepted .M rs linekler (assistant. Te Kiri). Miss Seecomhe (assistant, 1 ikuiangi), and .Miss Holding (solo tea-
cher, Kina). Tlie following teachers wort 1 granted leave of absence—. Miss JM. Scott, .Miss Vila llice (Awatnna), Miss I. H. -tones (Pitone), Mr W. A. Hrmvn (l.epperton). and JMr TT. Sissons (Ventral Messrs Trimble. Morton, and Masters were appointed a committee to visit Wellington, it they thought d necessary, when the report on the education boundaries comes before Parliament, and to attend to any other business of the board.
