NEW EXPLOCIVE SHELL. Vv.n Prkss Association*. Whangarei, July 27. A «hel! for which extraordinary powers are claimed has been invented by Mr A. H. Cotton, of Otakairangi. The claims include that the new projectile will cover a greater area with flying pieces than any known shell. It is also claimed to be specially effective against barbed wire entanglements, and finally it will make the most deadly bomb yet contrived for aeroplanes. Entirely new principles pre involved in this invention, which deeply impressed military men. A leading New Zealand scientist has pronounced the invention all that is claimed for it Particulars have been sent to Mr Lloyd George and the Premier of the Commonwealth, the inventor being of opinion that it is no use offering it to New Zealand.

ACQUISITION OF NATIVE LAND

Wellington, July 27

The Farmers' Union Conference passed a resolution that the Government be asked: (1) To acquire as much unoccupied Native land a s possible each year and offer it for settlement; (2) to repeal the Urewera Native Reserve Act and throw open for settlement the Upper Urewera Country; (3) to put on the market at 'once all lands already purchased from ithe Natives in the Urewera Country;

i|) to throw open for selection all Crown Lands as soon as they are surveyed ; ..'i) that Natives' lands which benefit from the expenditure of special and general rates shall be placed upon the same footing as European lauds so situated. A WELLINGTON AFFRAY. Wellington, July 27. A sensational shooting affray occurred in the city this afternoon, as a result of which a man named Harry. Parslow was seriously injured. It is stated that about 4..'50 p.m. Parslow, who resides at No. '283 Martin Street, fired a revolver at Ernest William Collingwood, a soldier in uniform, at his house in Martin Street. Parslow then turned the weapon on himself, and fired a bullet through his head, the bullet entering behind one ear and emerging on the opposite «ide of the skull. Collingwood had a remarkable escape from grave injury. The bullet struck a metal hook on his uniform, glanced off, and passed through the edge of the tunic, grazing his side. Parslow. who is 53 years of age, wa.s removed to the hospital, and late to-night was in a serious condi!tion. Wellington, July 28. Parslow died at an early hour this morning.
