THE BROKEN HILL DISPUTE. United Pres* Association. (Received 10.20 a.m.) Melbourne, July 28. The Broken Hill Associated Smelters, in a reply to Mr Hughes, have issued a statement, which says that the company was formed only this year, the capital of £750,000 being sub* scribed. The North and South Pro* prietary of the Broken Hill companies and of the Zinc Corporation, object to smelter, and refine the whole output of Broken Hill, tinder the Articles of Association, foreign shareholders are prohibited, and no alien is allowed to participate in the management. An independent agency was establish* ed i» London to sell direct to consumers. Tlie Board on a number of occasions refused business with certain London firms, some of which are apparently approved officially. The Company claims that all operation* are free of German influence or control. On June 2 the Company repeated to the British Government their offer to sell the whole output at such prices and for such-a period us the British Government desired. Negotiations are proceeding, it being understood that Jfhe Companies offered to accept substantially lower prices than the ruling market price. The reply adds: "Mr Hughes apparently believes the Broken Hill Proprietary and the Associated Smelters' Proprietary are really the same company, ft is ii mistake, and led t<> such .grotesque consequences that in his statement be said that no reply was necessary to a number of his allegations."
