SPORTING.

TROTTINC. (Notes by "Dan Patch.") To-morrow, Taranaki followers of the Wheel and Saddle, after a lapse of close on twenty years, will once again hear the totalizator bell ringing at a trotting .meeting in their own pro-, vinee. Certainly in the interim, trotting events have been run in conjunction with the gallops at both Stratford and Opunake, but such a combination is never a great success, and hence the efforts of the trotting people to secure] a meeting for that class of horse in; Taranaki. When on? considers ' the short notice received by the Waimate Plains Club, it must be admitted they have done splendidly. All that is now required to make the fixture a success is fine weather.

Proceedings to-morrow will open with the Auroa Handicap, for which fourteen accepted. Although unable t>. do much work owing to the bad weather. Butterfat should bo prominent. Halo, who trotted well at Manawatu, may poisibly be the hardest to beat.

The Normanhy'Ha'dicap has drawn at; acceptance of olovon. Barraclongh holds a strong hand with PriiV'ora and Ebony Lass, but may find the southerners (Jimmy Woodsir and Prinz)

difficult propositions. - The Waimate Plains Handicap should provide a Rood race The scratch horse. Clive, has several Rood two-wile handicaps to his credit, and has boon successful both in Canterbury and Auckland, and as he is a straight-out trotter and in consequence wil 1 not he hampered by the ."'soft going. He is well a.t present, a- . Ids victory in the Waikato Cup last \ month proves. Myrtle Palm showed good form at both Timaru and Manawatu.but would perhaps be better suited over a shorter course. Celtic, on Vthc losecs mark, is not badly handicapped. He ran a good race to Ngirama at Palmerston, and if BarraclOugh can keep him down must he handy. The locally-trained Capillose, although a good bit above himself, is looking well. Of those on the limit ', Jinimie Woodsir (if reserved), and Ebony Lass must have chances. Jimmy Woodsir, Clive and Celtic should i make the event exciting. A large number figure in the FarmS ers' Trot, including the Stratford-own-, j ed Takaka. Halo and'Lady Sefton are l on good marks. A number of fair trotters will start in the Stratford Handicap, and Monsoon, Clive, and I Chub are reliable. It is rather unior- ! tunate for the Club that the Manaia ' and Hawera Handicaps follow one ani other, as quite a number of the acceptors appear in both races. Had the Farmers' Race been placed sixth instead of fourth owners would possibly have started their charges in both the Manaia and Hawera Handicaps ; as it ; is both events will suffer. Aoteaoroa, who is on the mark in both these events, showed good form at Gisborhe, will have difficulty in giving away 18sec to St. fieo and lGsec to Resurrection iii the Manaia, whilst St. Leo (Msec). if reserved, and Myrtle Palm (tOsec) ! are a pair in the Hawera Handij cap.
