'Mr Ashmead "Bartle'tt reports that ■'■ the "Dardanelles success on the 12th - and 13th, Was achieved after desperate fighting, and anyone who has'uot seen the ground can have no conception of the obstacles the heroic infantry hove to face, in gaining even a few yards of fresh, soil. The Tprks have now realised .'that no infantry can withstand the bombardment of highexploWes, and concentrated ti small section of the defence, and therefore withdraw most of the men down the communication trenches, whilst the ocmbardraent lasts. Onr infantry are. thus able to occupy two or three lines at a small loss. "'The majority of the casualties occur after the trench has -Jjeen won. The enemy knowing the plan of their own trenches attack with • bombs through the saps. Fighting at close parties get two far forward, and are frequently lost for . hours. '..'.
