Corporal A. S. Allen, second sou of Captain Allen, is visiting his people before departing with the (3th Lloiul'orcemciits.

Captain Arthur Allen, of Ngaere. has disposed of his properly to .Messrs Wighton and Moss, of rlalconihe, Nurserymen. The popular Captain is now residing at Kilzioy.

Mr I). Duncan. Manaia (says Hie Witness) has been appointed manager of the Stratford Mountain House out of 25 applicants from all parts ol the Dominion. .Mr Duncan enters oil his new appointment at the end of the present month.

Th:< Rev. A. Mitchell, of Dyttoltdn, has been appointed Methodist chaplain to the 7th Reinforcements, says a Press Association telegram. Chap-lain-Captain -Mitchell has been closely associated with the volunteer and territorial forces of tin 1 Dominion for the last ten years.

Many residents of. this district will hear with regret of the death of Mr Michael Berlin, which occurred, after ;i brief illness, curly on Saturday morning at his residence in (Jonville, Wapganui. The late .Mr Bergin, who was 6-1 years of age, was a native of Rosorca. County Tipperary, Ireland. After a couple of years in London, he came as a young man to New Zealand, and took up land in Canterbury, I|( '- in& tor about '2-"> years a well-known settler of the Southbridge district. About 15 years ago. he came to the North Island, since when ho lived mostly in the Taranaki district, throughout which he was well-known as" mine host of the Albion iPatea) and' Inglcwood Hotels. About IS months ago. he came to Wanganui. residing at Gonville till his death. Mr Bergin's personal popularity, both in Canterbury and Taranaki, was very great, due to his unvarying geniality and kindliness, for he was a man who never missed an opportunity ol doing a good turn. He leaves a widow and an adult family of three sons and seven daughters, who will have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.
