LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Chief Postmaster advises that the mails despatched from Wellington via Sue/, on June 9th arrived in London on the 22nd inst.
The Stratford Borough Council had the directors of the Electrical Supply Company meet this evening to discuss the question of the Council acquiring the Company's business.
Dining tlio course of a picture l at tin' local house one evening last week a small hoy who had watched a fight to a finish expressed his delight at the hero's win thus: "Done 'im, fair on the snout." "Merrie England" will be produced at Eltham tin's evening by the Stratford Operatic Society. The funds arc to he devoted to the Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund. It is anticipated thai a number of local people will visit ICltham to give the amateurs deserved support. The Railway Department have been hard at work on the big slip between Douglas and Huiroa. but the shortage of la hour- has delayed the work considerably. Yesterday morning a train left Stratford at about seven o'clock with several trucks of ballast and a carriage conveying a number of workmen who arc getting a wage of los for the day's work. Probably had the Department advertised for workers for the day, there would have been a rush of clerks, shopmen, and "all sorb*" to take advantage of a line day's outing, and incidentally to earn a modest sum into the bargain. The local chemists are rumoured to have spent all day Sunday preparing blister! ointment. It's an ill rain that leaves nobody some drops of comfort. In the meantime the task is boinn tackled in earne-t. both day an<| night shifts being on t he job.
