The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1915. JEWISH SOLDIERS.
The oilier day a cable message render-
ed tardy justice to the Jewish people by giving some, really striking statistics as to the number of Jews fighting on the side of the Allies. The Will' lias (says tlie Christchurch Press) certainly dealt a heavy blow to the common enough idea, (bat the Jew of to-day dislikes fighting as much as Judas .Maccabeus, that most tremendous of all warriors, loved it. An English writer recently noted the way in which the Jews in all countries have flocked to the colours, especially in England and in Russia. There is no compulsion in England, and yet. out of a population of 250,000, over 10,000 Jews are in the Army. In France, Germany. Austria, Turkey and Serbia there is conscription, and Jew and Gentile alike have to serve willy-nilly. There is conscription in Russia, too, but there the Jews have beon very enthusiastic recruits. Russian Jews residing in England ami in other countries retufiled in large numbers voluntarily to Russia to join the colors. In view of the evil treatment the Jews have suffered in Russia in the past, this is very remarkable. An interesting explanation has been given. The persecution of the Jews—especially, and significantly, in Poland has been part of a fierce policy of Rossification, which was due to a desire to counter the. growing power and influence of Germany. The Jews, it is explained, realise that the crushing of Germany will remove the danger which led to the policy of Russification. lint, apart from this, the Jews, who have suffered so much, know well that the hope of kittle nationalities and little peoples lies in the destruction of German power. This is their war as much as any body's.
