The Italians gained' a mile towards Tiernova. and reached a point commanding the railway junction, whereby food passes to Gariy,ia from the I iernova plateau. A thrilling episode occurred at a height of ten thousand feet in the Tonale pass region. The Austrians thought they, had found two undefended passes which would enable them to break through Western Trentino and reach the Lombard plain. Parties of Tyrolese mountaineers, with guns, traversed the Adamello glacier, crossing
a sea of ice lor seven miles in a raging blizzard. They split up into two columns, and stoli> cautiously along the tracks known only to Alpine smng- ' glees, expecting to catch the Italians napping. The Italian Alpini discovered them, and after a sharp fight the Tyrolese were defeated, and had to relace 'the glacier and blizzard. It is unknown they regained their lines. I Italy is preparing for a winter campaign in the Alps, and is collecting' skins, including those of rabbits, foxes, and wolves. The people are urged ip encourage the temporary breeding of animals which multiply quickly.
