Ai.iire mis discovered at,11.30. this lUDi'tiiii" in the forehold of the steamer Caldergrove, which was loaded with case oil from Philadelphia. The hold, which; was .half fujl of benzoliii'e, had not been worked this morning, but half an hour before some of the crew had been working below, and the hatch was left open for ventilation.: .A little smoke was seen coining out, .and two leads of the ship's- ho.si' WW. taken down to the hold and the fire .brigade called out. The" fire was found anlong a quantity of-paper and tow between the outer row of cases and the sljip's side, and had evidently been placed there with intent to start a blaV.e. The fire was extinguished when the ends of nine cases had been charred. Had the hlfste •" progressed much further, the ship would probably have been blown] up.
