ENEMY'S OFFENSIVE CHECKED

A Vienna communique states the Ip. east of the Vistula is proceeding with numerous severe Russian attacks which were bloodily repulsed. Our troops have been withdrawn to the heights north of Krasnik owing to attacks by superior Russian forces brought up for the protection of Lublin. Some Russian advanced positions west of the Vistula were stormed. The general situation on the Bug is unchanged.
London, July 8
The Times points out thae importance of the great Russian rally at Krasnik. The severe check to the enemy's offensive between the Rug and the Vistula is proving that the Austrian assertions that they have pierced the line here are premature and incorrect.
A military court at Libau sentenced to death the French Consul, M. Maidil, director of the Riga Commercial Bank, because he possessed a record of German atrocities. M. Maidil was warned and fled.
CAPTURE OF 11,000 GERMANS
The High Commissioner reports:— London, July 9 (6.35 a.m.)
Petrograd announces that the Russians are assuming the offensive, and successfully repulsed the enemy advance in the direction of Lublin, capturing 11,000 prisoners and numerous maxims, and that the retreating enemy is being pursued.
