NO WINTER CAMPAIGN.
THE KAISER TO HIS TROOPS-
SUPREME EFFORT IN AUTUMN.
United Press, Association. (Received 9.15 a.m.) t London, July 5. The Kaiser addressed the troops at Berlin last week, when he swore there would he no winter campaign, and that the war would be ended in October. It is stated, however, that Germany is nevertheless preparing for a winter campaign, which all classes dread, and that Germany will make
suj)repie effort in the autumn, probably with a general furious offensive on the western front.
THE GERMAN OFFENSIVE.
VIOLENT BOMBARDMENTS.
(Received 9.5 a.m.) Paris, July 5. A communique states: After violent bombardment, tlie Germans made two night attacks, one against Souche/and the other against Labyrinth, but both were repulsed, the enemy leaving many dead. The Germans on Sunday afternoon took the offensive on a front of five kilometres from Fayenhaye to the Moselle, also to the east of Fayenhaye us well as in the western part of Bois le Pretre, and they succeeded after violent bombardment in regaining a footing in their old lines which were previously taken by us, but despite an energetic attack they were unable to advance further. Their attack eastward on the’'Moselle failed, and they sustained heavy losses.
THE WESTERN FRONT. The High Commissioner reports: London, July 5 (5.35 p.m.) Foinimup yoObgnen hi flennf Two German attacks at Souehez and the Labyrinth were checked at ten o’clock on Sunday night. The enemy took the offensive on a front of five kilometres between Fayenhaye and the Moselle and regained a footing in a kilometre of trenches at Hois Le Pretre. 'ijhe remainder of the attack failed, being attended with heavy losses.
