MAKING SHELLS.
I I A DOMINION EXPERIMENT. | ! Pjbk Pbisss Association. ; Wellington, .Inly 2As it has been denion.strated that shells, at least of a certain type, ran bo made iu the Dominion, and considerable interest has been taken in 1 this question, a pressman to-day elicitjed the following tacts. Recently a | Blenheim firm received an 18-pounder , shell, and after one or two attempts I succeeded in manufacturing what ap- ! pea red to be a satisfactory missile. [ This was sent to Wellington, and in the , presence of the defence authorities } was exploded in the shell testing box lat one of the forts. 1 was found to be thoroughly efficient, and quite as satisfactory as the model from which it w;is made. It is stated that no arrangements have been made by the Defence Department for a supply. Various questions, such as the cost ol the local article, and speed at which it can be made, and the probable capacity of the output have to be considered before any definite contract can l>e entered into. The opinion of engineers and ironl'ounders seems to be borne out, namely, that the casings of shells can at least be manufactured in this country, the main difficulty being the supply of experienced workmen.
