"Eye-Witness" says that the Bavarians, who have just taken over a section of the defence near Messines. made a small local offensive on 23rd June. The operations for several days were confined to mining and aviation. The enemy were active underground, and there were many subterranean encounters.

GERMAN ATTACKS FAIL. [Unit*d Pe»m Association.] '(Received 10 a.m.) Paris, July 2. A communique states: There was heavy bombardment at many points, notably in the region of Woostan,north of Ypres, and at Souchez, and Vernuil, North of the Aisne. An attack by .the German Grenadiers on the Ablain road failed completely. The struggle is being continued in the Argonne with the greatest violence throughout the night, the Germans using asphyxiating bombs.

THE WESTERN OPERATIONS.

The High Commissioner reports:— London July 2 (5.25 p.m.)

An attack by the German forces, which was preceded by bombardment, and which was made with violence at two o'clock this morning on the line Ablain-Angres", north of the Bethune Road, was completely stopped. Two other attacks were repulsed. One in the Argonne was accompanied with a. large amount of bomb-throwing, the missiles containing asphyxiating gas. The other, at Bois Le Pretre, was proceeded by artillery fire.
