THE SUGAR INDUSTRY^

(Received 9.40 a.m.) Brisbane, June 30. Acting under an agreement with the Federal authorities, the State Government acquires the whole of the 191 o sugar production . from Queensland, the price averaging eighteen pounds per ton of raw sugar. The Common wealth Government will then purchase at cost price and sell to the community, using its powers to place the product on the market at its own expense at the best possible price. The agreement provides that the Commonwealth and Queensland Government’s co-operate for the benefit ol consumers and the protection of those engaged iu the industry. Mr Ryan considers that this arrangement is a strong guarantee of the stability of the industry and a solution of the present difficulties. He anticipates that the existing refineries will refine the raw material. He does not think any difficulty will arise in this phase of the .question, hut special legislation might become necessary. The estimated crop is between 120,000 to 130,000 tons. On this estimate the purchasing price for the crop will he about £2,200,000.
