The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER MONDAY, JUNE 21, 1915. REPRISAL BY AIRMEN.
The fact that the Allies have at last hardened their hearts sufficiently to give a German town a taste of what an aerial raid means, has probably done far more good than all the pro-! tests against the murderously pitiless! warfare Germany instituted and gloat-' ingly carried out. That we should have refrained so long from reprisal is almost a pity, but the temper of the Allies is now such that further mercy is not likely to he shown, though, of course, no one ever supposes or desires that the soldiers and sailors who are lighting for a world's freedom could ever descend to such sheer brutality as the Germanic mind has shown itself to love. The Allies have properly and fairly sought to blockade Germany so that her free trade in war materials may lie stopped.' They have also honorably and with daring sunk warships and transports with submarines, and in this department have far outshone any boasted German effort. They have strenuously carried out every offensive that the law of nations and the laws of humanity permit in war-1 time, hut they have never attempted to emulate German treachery and ('rightfulness. For nearly a year the German soil has been practically immune from such horrors as their people have ruthlessly inflicted on Belgium, the north of France, and undefended English coastal towns, hut the world is beginning to realise that it is only by suffering that Germany will be brought to a realisation of her wickedness, and she must be made to suffer in mind and heart and estate as she lias wantonly made others' do. The miserable squeal from Kaiserdom at the bombing of Karlsruhe is evidence that they do not like their own methods- when practiced on themselves: but they really have no cause for a single murmur. It may now also sink into the obtuse German mind tliai Britain does not in future intend to permit the outrages on hor undefended
Unvu» to go unavenged. The feats of the Allies' airmen have clearly demonstrated that they are as daring, as skilful, and as well-equipped as even the pupils oi' the much belauded Zeppelin himself, and that they are capable of inflicting real punishment on Hie cowardly and unscrupulous enemy has been nnelv demonstrated.
