LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Some day, among the fire-swept hills of Turkey, or'near other fields of battle, or at base hospitals, says the Wellington "Post," Wellington's soldiers of the Empire's legions will look upon the Handwriting of Children, and the few words, in full round letters, carefully penned, will take the readers hack for a while to their native land, and they may have "thoughts that lie too deep for tears." Somebody in this city bad a happy inspiration ; it was an idea to invite the school children of the Wellington military area to divert twopence from their own pleasure to a little act of kindness to the brave soldiers abroad. Thus, every man from this district is to have a little pocket book and pencil to record his exploits and the feats of the forces generally. Mrs Luke, president of the organisation which has promoted tm.s enterprise, says that practically every school between the city rind Gisborne has contributed a fair share to the cost, and there is a surplus which is | helping to provide a tin of sweets lor every soldier from this area. Each book and tin will carry the name of a boy or girl and the name of the : school concerned. Thus each little i gift has the pleasant personal touch | of a child, which may mean more to a ' soldier far away than praise by the 1 great or munificence by the rich. . Young folk in Wellington are gumming on the labels and putting the I pencils in place.
