LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Sir Joseph Ward passed through. Stratford last night by the mail train on liis way to Waitara. He was greeted with hearty cheers on appearing on the car platform at (me local station. The inquest, this morning was delayed for about an hour owing to one of the jurors, to wit. Mr W. A. Hewitt, turning up late. In his absence the Acting-Coroner imposed a line ol £2. Shortly, Mr Hewitt arrived and breathlessly explained that he had mistaken the date. The Acting-Coroner eventually remitted the fine, after admonishing the guilty one. As a sequel to the repeated complaints of people on the wharf being deluged with water, James Hu (let, iireman on the Wahine, was charged at the Lyttelton Court to-day with assault. The Press Association states that a detective said that he had seen accused squirting water through a port hole. The Pencil inflicted a fine of 80s and costs, and severely warned licensed.
