DEATH OF LIEUTENANT FREYSERC. Peh Press Association. Wellington, June 9. A cable message received to-day by the Prime Minister convoys the news ot the death in the- Dardanelles of Lieutenant Oscar Frey here, eldest son of the late Mr James Freyberg, of Wellington, and brother to LieutenantCommander Bernard Freyberg, who was last week included in the Distinguished Service Orders. Deceased ,who was 31 years of age, and unmarried, was born at Kensington, London, and arrived in Wellington with his parents in 1891. He was for some time a law clerk here, but was engaged in journalism before he left for London in October to enlist. Previous information was that Lieutenant Freyberg had been in charge of a section of trawlers engaged in minesweeping operations in the North Sea, when he had the experience of being blown up no less than three times in the boats under him. He was promoted, and went to the Dardanelles, whence comes news of his death. Lieutenant Freyberg was a prominent yachtsman, and recently vice-com-mander of the Port Nicholson Yacht Chib. He was known throughout New Zealand as a very successful competitor in that form of sport, and was also at one time well known in swimming circles.
About six years ago Lieutenant Frey berg was a member of the legal staff of Messrs Hoy and Nicholson, of New Plymouth, and took an active interest in all matters connected with acquatics. THE HOSPITAL SHIP. Wellington, June 9. Contributions acknowledged by the Internal Affairs Department for the Hospital Ship Fund now total £27,801. AUDITING PATRIOTIC FUNDS. Wellington, June 9. The Government is asking the various committees which are collecting for the various patriotic funds to have auditors appointed to audit their accounts. The Government, the Minister of Finance states, had no power to insist on this being done. It will lie impossible for the Audit Department to undertake this work, and the Minister said to a reporter that here was an opportunity for the members of the Society of Accountants to come forward and offer to “do their little bit.”
